Max Tudor - 28, bisexual, criminal underboss

News had spread fast amongst the criminal underworld about Max Tudor’s sudden change in status. The notoriously brutal and unforgiving enforcer was known for his audacious heists and vicious beatings, meaning that any story about him in the underworld either involved theft or violence but the latest news was far from either of those. To the surprise of all, Max Tudor was about to become a father. 

The news had surprised Max himself but he’d nonetheless adapted with trademark ruthless efficiency to his newfound role. From attending scans through to considering names, Max had been involved throughout with his partner and his mind so often dwelled towards what the future held when their child arrived. He also approached each and every task to prepare without delay but even then he still felt unprepared. It was a lingering feeling of anxiety compounded more so on that day in question by the ‘arduous’ task of trying to assemble a crib. 

"Easy to assemble my fucking arse,” Max growled in a low, angry tone as he set down two pieces of wood with a slight, annoyed thud. “I can plan a fucking heist without a hitch but I get defeated by IKEA? This is such fucking bullshit,” he added, words spat acidly to himself as he thought he was the only one in the room. The perception changed a mere second later when he heard the sound of a throat clearing and he turned to see his pregnant partner in the doorway. 

“Ah, didn’t see you there... you’ll see that I’m losing a battle right now...” Max said by way of introduction.

I find it funny that in many histfic novels (sympathetic portrayals included) Henry Tudor spends his time in Brittany gadding about Duke Francis’s court, hunting, making conversation, sometimes fathering a bastard, dallying with this or the other lady, making friends with the Breton nobility etc, when his time in Brittany seems to have been much less fun than that. For starters, Jasper and Henry were kept as literal prisoners since 1474 at the latest, when we know Louis XI was informed of their status/situation. An entry dated January 1475 made by Duke Francis’ secretary refers to Henry as a ‘prisonnier’ in the castle of Largoet where he was kept in a tiny room in a tower. Henry and Jasper weren’t even kept together either: Jasper was kept under the guard of Bertran du Parc, a professional soldier, from 1475 right up to Edward IV’s death, whilst Henry had a series of different ‘guardians’/gaolers (it seems he spent at max two years under each gaoler, leaving less room for establishing friendships, I suppose). I agree it does make for less interesting fiction, though.

PHILADELPHIA | Gaffe by pinch-running pitcher costs Phils, Nats win 5-4

PHILADELPHIA  — Vince Velasquez was aggressive at the wrong time. Velasquez, a pinch-running pitcher, was called out for leaving second base early while tagging up, resulting in a game-ending double play that gave the Washington Nationals a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

After Aaron Nola outpitched Max Scherzer for the second time in six days in a matchup of NL Cy Young Award contenders, the Phillies watched Washington rally for three runs in the ninth to take a 5-3 lead.

Wilson Ramos got Philadelphia within a run with a pinch-hit double in the bottom half, and Velasquez ran for the catcher. Greg Holland relieved and retired Jorge Alfaro on a fly ball to center, with Velasquez moving to third as the potential tying run. Velasquez slid past the bag but wasn’t tagged.

The Nationals, however, appealed that Velasquez left too soon, and he was called out. A replay upheld the ruling. “I wasn’t nervous. I was trying to put pressure on the outfielder,” Velasquez said.

Manager Gabe Kapler told Velasquez after the game he should’ve stayed on second.

“He’s an inexperienced runner who gave us a valiant effort,” Kapler said. “He got overzealous.”

Anthony Rendon hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Pat Neshek (1-1) in the Nationals ninth. The Nationals trailed 3-2 when Bryce Harper drew a leadoff walk from Tommy Hunter. Neshek surrendered Rendon’s 17th homer, and Washington added another run on an error after Ryan Zimmerman hit his third double of the game and stole third.

“I was just trying to see a pitch to hit,” Rendon said about connecting on a 1-2 slider.

It was the latest gut-wrenching loss for the Phillies, who are 6-13 since Aug. 8 and fell 4 ½ games behind NL East-leading Atlanta. “It’s a super difficult loss to swallow,” Kapler said. “I don’t worry about this group. They’re tenacious and resilient.”

Alfaro and Odubel Herrera hit homers off Scherzer to hand Nola a 3-0 lead. But poor defense and a shaky bullpen blew it.

Nola gave up two runs — one earned — and four hits, striking out eight in seven innings. He threw eight dominant innings in

Philadelphia’s 2-0 win at Washington last Thursday. Scherzer gave up three runs and four hits in five innings, tying for his shortest outing of the season on April 4 at Atlanta.

“It was awesome,” Scherzer said of the comeback. “A great team win.”

Herrera, who hit a two-run shot off Scherzer last week, gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Batting cleanup for the first time in his career, Herrera drove a 2-2 fastball into the right-field seats for his 21st homer. Alfaro connected in the fifth.

Nola took a shutout into the seventh before Rendon led off with a single and Zimmerman hit a double with one out. Matt Wieters followed with a grounder to first. Carlos Santana stepped on the bag for the second out but made an errant throw home allowing Zimmerman to also score.

Koda Glover (1-2) tossed a scoreless eighth for the win. ACES WILD

Nola-Scherzer II was the second matchup of starters with at least 150 innings and a sub-2.25 ERA since they did it last week. Previously, it hadn’t been done since St. Louis’ John Tudor faced Mets ace Dwight Gooden on Sept. 11, 1985. Nola lowered his ERA to 2.10 and Scherzer’s rose to 2.22.

JOEY BATS The Phillies acquired veteran slugger Jose Bautista from the New York Mets for a player to be named or cash. Bautista batted .196 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs for the Braves and Mets this season. A six-time All-Star for Toronto from 2010-15, the 37-year-old Bautista has 342 career homers. He struck out swinging as a pinch-hitter in the seventh.

YOU’RE OUTTA HERE Nationals pinch-hitter Mark Reynolds was ejected after being called out on strikes in the eighth. After walking toward the dugout, he came back and threw his batting gloves.

TRAINER’S ROOM Nationals: Closer Sean Doolittle threw a full bullpen session before the game and he’s scheduled to pitch a simulated game Friday. The All-Star lefty has been on the disabled list since July 10 with left toe inflammation.

Phillies: Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff is expected to make another start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley before he’s recalled after rosters are expanded. Eickhoff hasn’t pitched in the majors this season because of a strained lat and a finger injury.

UP NEXT RHP Jake Arrieta (9-9, 3.57) goes for Philadelphia and LHP Gio Gonzalez (7-11, 4.35) starts for the Nationals in the series finale Wednesday. The Phillies are 12-13 in Arrieta’s starts. He’s 1-2, 4.89 in 11 starts vs. Washington. Gonzalez is 11-7, 2.69 in 25 starts vs. Philadelphia.

The continual clanking of the metal cane against the floor every time Max took a step, combined with his occasional grunting, was a clear giveaway of his presence to anyone that he happened to be approaching. Things had been wildly different in the past, his former profession as a thief and armed robber meaning that he used to enter any place undetected if he so wished. It had all changed in a twist of fate that had seen a job go awry and Max take a bullet in his right leg. He had survived and escaped capture thanks to his crew but the bullet had damaged his calf to such an extent that he had a permanent limp and thus required the imposing cane he now always held. 

With the sound of the cane and an occasional gruff growl introducing him before he’d even stepped into the room, Max entered the bedroom to see the other looking at him. “I would ask if you’re surprised to see me but we both know that’s a lie,” Max quipped by way of introduction, moving deeper into the room in the direction of the drinks cabinet. He kept his gaze on them as he walked, a slight smirk creeping onto his lips as a result. 

“I’m assuming your darling loved one isn’t going to be back at all tonight?” he asked then, the question nonchalant as if he’d asked about something innocuous rather than infidelity. “I’m actually quite surprised he leaves you alone so often... you’d think he’d pay more attention or at least have some suspicion that his chief underboss is fucking you on the sly?” Max added then, smirk growing at the reference to his own role in the deception of his boss by fucking his partner.

For any regular partygoer, it was nigh on impossible to reach Max’s office at the rear of the club. Four bouncers stood between the main floor and his inner sanctum whilst the room itself was protected by a security system used elsewhere by embassies and banks. One might argue such protection was overkill for any club owner but Max’s business interests extended far beyond the Nightshade and as such he needed a level of security where he could feel his base and operations were suitably protected.

However, whilst Max had such a strong level of protection upon his office, there were certain people whom he allowed past the barriers and as he entered his office that evening, he found one of them sat upon his couch. “I didn’t expect you here so early, normally you turn up nearer the end of the night...” Max remarked upon seeing them, the door closing behind him and automatically locking to leave them secure from the outside world. 

Rather than say anything else, the gangster moved towards the drinks cabinet to pour himself a single malt. Whilst doing so, he noticed their gaze upon him but quickly deduced it wasn’t for him but rather for the imposing, colourful landscape newly hung on his wall. “I see you noticed the Vermeer...” he said then, stopping at the cabinet to pour himself the liquor. “That’s a new acquisition of mine, something that a banker uptown is fretting about at this very moment. Do you like it?”

A barely contained cry of pain and anguish came from the poor, unfortunate soul that Max’s men were dragging from the room, the other man having believed a mere minute before that he was in for a night of hot sex when all he was going to get now was a vicious beating. Max had no qualms about dishing out such punishments upon those who stood in his way or threatened him, his ire and ruthlessness even extending to those who inadvertently crossed his path in the wrong manner. The man who’d been dragged out fell into the last category but it mattered little to the enforcer.

Despite the punishment being doled out on the random stranger, Max’s glare was firmly upon the woman before him. He approached them and stopped barely a few feet away, his final step accompanied by a deliberately loud clanking of his heavy cane upon the floor as he put it in place. The music from the club downstairs still blared upwards but Max barely considered it, his attention entirely focused on the lover who kept pushing him to his limits. 

“You can never quite stop being a brat, can you?” Max growled, gaze still intense and dark towards them. “How many times are you going to provoke me or test my loyalty? Here’s a simple warning about that, darling... if you push me too much then I might just give you a harsher punishment than last time...”
